THE HISTORY:
Built way back in 1465 The Red Lion Hotel has many a story to tell. This lovely grade 1 listed building boasts original tudor features such as many wooden beams throughout, original bedrooms and many ghosts! One of the most well known ghosts is that of Alice Millar a chamber maid from the 17th century. Alice was a well known and liked person and a respected member of the community took a shine to her and a relationship took place between the two, then one day in 1638 Alice was found dead in her room. Since the tragedy there have been many sightings of Alice throughout the hotel mainly in rooms 5, 6 and 10 and in the kitchen area. One night an assistant manager was staying in the hotel and was woken from his sleep with what felt like a bolt of lightning passing through his body and he called see a rocking chair in his room slowly rocking back and fourth then materialised the ghost of Alice. Alice asked if he was alright to which he shakely said yes and she disappeared. So shaken by this he ordered Alice's former bedroom to be bricked up but to no avail as sightings of her have continued including people seeing her walking through the bricked up area into her room. The figure of a monk has been spotted on numerous occasions around the reception area and corridors. It is believed that he was staying at the hotel when a fire broke out and in his attempt to get the children in his care out of the building he himself perished. The ghost of a small boy has also been seen in The Parliament Room. His spirit is mostly seen by other children but he likes to join in when photos are being taken. Then there's Claude the naval Captain who's active in the upstairs bedrooms.
THE HAUNTINGS:
